Over 25 Restaurants and Businesses—and Counting—Are Uniting in support of Human Rights Day DFW on December 10th, proceeds to benefit Human Rights Initiative of North Texas

DALLAS – Dozens of Dallas-area restaurants and businesses are coming together to celebrate the third annual Human Rights Day DFW on December 10, the anniversary of the 1948 day on which the United Nations adopted the universal declaration of human rights. As in past years, participants are each donating to a benefitting non-profit organization: Human Rights Initiative of North Texas (HRI), a Dallas-area organization that provides free legal and social services to immigrants who have found safety from persecution, torture, domestic violence and abuse in DFW.

“One of the privileges of building a successful business is the ability to give back to our community,” said Nikky Phinyawatana, owner of Asian Mint family of restaurants. “Human Rights Day DFW allows us to feed souls by investing in services supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community: survivors of human rights abuses from across the world. We hope other businesses across the metroplex will join us in feeding their souls to say we welcome you, we stand with you, and we celebrate you.”

Human Rights Day DFW is sponsored by Certified on the Fly and TABC on the Fly and restaurant participants include: The Art of Wine, Asian Mint (Forest Lane and Campbell Road locations), Clutch Bar, Concrete Cowboy (Uptown, Frisco, and Fort Worth), Cultivar (both locations), Doce Mesa, Haywire, Lavender Bistro Provancal, Look Cinemas, Maharaja Indian Restaurant (Little Elm), Parigi, Secret Recipe (Plano), Sprezza, The People’s Last Stand, The Ranch, Toulouse (Legacy West), Turkish Café, and Zaguan

The People’s Last Stand, which has pledged 15% of sales to benefit HRI, will host a kick-off event the eve of the celebration on 12/9/2019 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. "We welcome the opportunity to introduce more people in our community to the great work HRI is doing fighting for the human rights of our clients,” Bill Holston, Executive Director of Human Rights Initiative said. “And it makes it even better that it is in collaboration with such great bars and restaurants in our community." he added.

Businesses are also joining the celebration. Award-winning Dallas-based Three Designing Women has teamed up with Artisan Stamp to participate, donating 100% of its profits from any sale using the code HRI2019. The Canning Underground, an Oregon-based boozy jam emporium, has created a brand-new, limited-edition marmalade, Immigrant Song, whose sales will benefit HRI. Additional participating businesses include: Doubletree by Hilton, Gotcha, Gupta and Wiora PC., Surplus Building Materials and Ustun Law Group PLLC.

HRI’s courageous and resilient clients have come to the U.S. from all over the world to seek safety from persecution, torture, domestic violence and abuse. All proceeds from participating vendors support HRI’s mission to provide 100% free legal and social services to its clients. Members of the public unable to dine out or shop on December 10 can make a direct donation to Human Rights Day DFW online .

About Human Rights Initiative of North Texas

Founded by social worker Serena Simmons Connelly and lawyer Elizabeth Healy, the Dallas-based Human Rights Initiative of North Texas has grown into an award-winning agency helping immigrant survivors of human rights abuses from all over the world. Our courageous and resilient clients are eligible to apply for legal status under the humanitarian provisions of United States immigration laws and policies: they are asylum seekers fleeing persecution; children who have been abandoned, abused, and neglected; and victims of family violence and violent crimes. HRI’s Legal team partners with a network of over 250 pro bono attorneys from top DFW firms and corporations to help clients access the U.S. immigration system, and our Social Services team offers transitional support and referrals to help address trauma and ease the hardships of profound displacement. At HRI, all our services are free, and all are designed to help forge a path to safety, stability and opportunity. For more information, visit www.hrionline.org.
